- July is a German Shepherd with mesmerizing eyes. She is an Explosive Detection Canine, a bomb dog, owned by the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA). She is my husband Herman’s partner, she lives with us, she is a much loved part of our family. Herman has been a police officer for 31 years, the last 15 of them in Canine, all handling bomb dogs. July is his 4th partner. The other three (all males) were retired for medical reasons to my husband and we cared for them for until their deaths, at 1 month, 5 months and 9 years after retirement. Herman is retiring in January 2010 and was told July, who will be 6 in January, would not be retired to him. She will be returned to Lackland Air Force Base to eventually be reassigned to another handler, in another city and he would never see her again. We are desperately hoping that someone out there sees this that knows something, someone, anything, that can help us keep July. We would even reimburse TSA for July. Herman proudly served his country in Vietnam. He is retiring after 35 years with the City of St. Louis. I think his partner would be a fitting retirement gift.
